Pfalz

Pfalz lies in Rhineland-Palatinate, on the sheltered eastern side of the Palatinate Forest, broadly between Bad Dürkheim, Neustadt an der Weinstraße and Landau. With 23,698 hectares under vine in 2022, it is Germany’s second-largest wine region after Rheinhessen. Vineyards largely occupy slopes and foothills facing the Rhine plain. The forest creates a rain-shadow effect, making Pfalz one of Germany’s warmest and driest wine regions. Its long growing season promotes dependable ripening, while altitude, aspect and cooler nights can retain freshness.

Soils are notably diverse. Around Forst, Deidesheim and Wachenheim, sandstone, basalt and calcareous strata all occur; elsewhere, loess, loam, clay, gravel and limestone are significant. This diversity helps explain why Riesling from one region can range from taut and mineral to broader and more generous. The northern Mittelhaardt contains many celebrated hillside sites, while the Südliche Weinstraße generally feels warmer and produces a broad range of white and red varieties.

Riesling is the leading grape, producing dry, finely fruited wines marked by citrus, peach, apple, herbs and often a saline or stony edge. Spätburgunder is increasingly important, yielding reds from elegant to powerful, with cherry, raspberry, spice and sometimes discreet oak. Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also thrive, while Gewürztraminer and international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon add breadth. The region also makes Sekt and, in suitable vintages, sweet Prädikat wines.

The legal Pfalz appellation includes the Mittelhaardt-Deutsche Weinstraße and Südliche Weinstraße Bereiche. Germany’s quality categories run from Deutscher Wein and Landwein to Qualitätswein and Prädikatswein; Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese refer to must weight at harvest and do not by themselves define sweetness. VDP members also follow their own origin-based hierarchy; dry wines from classified Grosse Lage sites may be labelled Grosses Gewächs. Well-known villages include Forst, Deidesheim, Wachenheim, Kallstadt, Birkweiler and Schweigen-Rechtenbach. Famous vineyard names include Kirchenstück, Pechstein, Jesuitengarten, Ungeheuer and Saumagen.

Dry Riesling from strong sites is appealing young but can gain smoky, honeyed and savoury complexity over five to fifteen years in bottle. The best Spätburgunders can also age gracefully. Serve fresh Riesling with trout, shellfish or lightly spiced Asian dishes; richer white wines suit poultry and creamy sauces, while Spätburgunder is a natural match for duck and mushrooms.
