Pommard

Pommard lies immediately south of Beaune in Burgundy’s Côte de Beaune. Its vineyards occupy mainly east- and south-east-facing slopes above the village, between the flatter land near the main road and the higher coteaux. The climate is continental, with cold winters and growing seasons that can be unsettled. Spring frost, hail and rain close to harvest are recurring hazards, so vineyard work and careful sorting can have a marked effect on the final wine.

The soils help explain Pommard’s distinct, often firm profile. Lower on the slope, deeper clay-limestone soils occur, in places with iron-rich deposits; higher sites tend to show more limestone, stones and marl. These variations create meaningful differences between climats within a relatively compact commune. Les Rugiens and the Epenots are widely regarded among its leading Premier Cru sites, though their expression depends closely on grower, vintage and position on the slope.

Created in 1937, the Pommard AOC is reserved exclusively for red wine, with Pinot Noir as its principal and defining grape. There is no white Pommard AOC, even though Chardonnay and Aligoté are grown elsewhere in Burgundy. The appellation includes village-level wines and a substantial group of Premier Cru vineyards, but no Grand Cru. Names worth knowing include Les Rugiens, Les Epenots, Les Pézerolles, Les Charmots and Clos des Epeneaux; the latter is a walled monopole.

A traditional Pommard often shows black cherry, plum and redcurrant, alongside violet, earth, spice and sometimes an iron-like mineral note. In comparison with many wines from nearby Volnay, it is commonly darker, broader and more tannic, although winemaking and vintage can substantially alter the style. Young examples often benefit from food or patience. Village wines may become expressive after several years, while strong Premier Crus can evolve for a decade or more, gaining texture, woodland complexity and savoury nuance.
