Barolo

Barolo is a red DOCG from the Langhe in Piedmont, north-western Italy. Its production zone surrounds the village of Barolo, southwest of Alba, across hills generally ranging from about 200 to 500 metres in altitude. The climate is continental, with cold winters, warm summers and a long growing season. Alpine influence, the shelter of the hills and autumn fog all shape the vintage; Nebbiolo is commonly linked etymologically with nebbia, the Italian word for fog.

Vineyards extend across eleven municipalities, including Barolo, La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Monforte d'Alba and Novello. Soil differences are central to the wines' varied personalities. Calcareous marls are widespread in and around La Morra and Barolo, often producing fragrant, graceful wines that can become approachable comparatively early. Serralunga d'Alba and parts of Monforte generally have more compact sandstone, clay and limestone-rich soils, and their Barolos are often firmer in structure and slower to evolve. Many vineyard sites are formally delimited as MGAs, or Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive.

Barolo must be made entirely from Nebbiolo. This late-ripening variety is pale in colour yet naturally high in both tannin and acidity. Typical notes include rose, violet, sour cherry, raspberry, tar, spice and earth; bottle age can bring truffle, dried flowers, tobacco and leather. Producers employ differing approaches, from longer macerations and large, older casks to shorter extraction and smaller barrels. The resulting styles vary, but the wine's defining freshness and tannic frame remain.

DOCG rules require at least 38 months of ageing, including a minimum of 18 months in wood. Barolo Riserva requires at least 62 months, again with at least 18 months in wood. Barolo may be released only from 1 January of the fourth year following harvest, while Riserva is released from the sixth. A good Barolo will commonly develop well for ten to twenty years or longer, depending on vintage, site and producer. Serve it at roughly 16–18°C with substantial dishes: tajarin with ragù, braised beef, game, mushroom dishes and mature hard cheeses.
