Rioja

Rioja is one of Spain’s best-known wine regions and holds the country’s highest traditional appellation status, Denominación de Origen Calificada (DOCa). Its vineyards follow the Ebro and its tributaries through La Rioja, part of Navarre and the Basque province of Álava. The region is divided into Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. The Sierra de Cantabria protects much of Alta and Alavesa from cool, wet Atlantic weather, while inland conditions bring sunny, dry summers and cold winters. Rioja Oriental is generally warmer and drier, with a more Mediterranean influence.

Soils vary substantially by zone and site. Limestone-rich clay is widespread in Rioja Alavesa and often supports freshness and structure; Rioja Alta includes clay-limestone and iron-rich soils. Alluvial soils and calcareous clay are more common in Rioja Oriental. Tempranillo is the backbone of red Rioja, bringing perfume, freshness and refined tannins. Garnacha contributes riper red fruit and warmth, Graciano adds colour, fragrance and acidity, and Mazuelo, known elsewhere as Carignan, provides firm tannin and freshness. Viura and Malvasía are the classic white varieties, joined by Garnacha Blanca and Tempranillo Blanco.

Red Rioja ranges from juicy joven wines, often with little or no oak ageing, to complex, long-aged bottlings. Traditional producers have frequently used American oak, which can bring vanilla, coconut, dill and sweet-spice notes; French oak is also widely used, often lending subtler toast and spice. White Rioja may be light and fresh, or barrel-aged, developing waxy, nutty and dried-fruit complexity. Rosado is generally dry and fruit-led.

The DOCa governs origin, permitted grapes and ageing. Familiar terms such as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva indicate legal minimum ageing periods, with different requirements for red, white and rosé wines. Rioja also permits origin statements for a zone, a municipality (Vino de Municipio) and an individual vineyard (Viñedo Singular). Haro in Rioja Alta is a historic centre for established houses, while Laguardia and Elciego are notable villages in Rioja Alavesa. Good Rioja commonly combines cherry and plum fruit with spice, leather or tobacco as it evolves in bottle. Crianza can be enjoyable young; well-made Reserva and Gran Reserva can age for many years.
